പഴയ കാലത്ത് സിനിമ കാണാൻ പോയാൽ തിയേറ്ററിനുള്ളിലെ മുട്ടയുടെ ശല്യമായിരുന്നു പ്രധാന പ്രശ്നം. കാലം മാറിയപ്പോൾ തിയേറ്ററുകളുടെ ഇൻഫ്രാസ്ട്രക്ച്ചർ തന്നെ മാറി. ആധുനിക സൗകര്യങ്ങളോടെ ആഡംബരത്തോടെ സിനിമ കാണാൻ ഇന്ന് സാധിക്കും. എന്നാൽ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം കൊച്ചി ലുലുമാളിൽ പി വി ആർ സിനിമാസ്സിൽ കുടുംബ സമേതം സിനിമ കാണാൻ പോയ ഒരമ്മയുടെ അനുഭവം വളരെ പരിതാപകരമാണ്. തിയേറ്ററിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്തു പോയി ട്രേയിൽ ചായയുമായി വന്നയാൾ ഇരുട്ടത്ത് തപ്പിത്തടഞ്ഞു വീണു. കയ്യിലിരുന്ന രണ്ടു ഗ്ലാസ് ചായ മറിഞ്ഞു വീണത് മുൻപിൽ സിനിമ കണ്ടിരുന്ന സ്ത്രീയുടെ ദേഹത്തണ്. തിളച്ച ചായ ദേഹത്ത് വീണ സ്ത്രീയെ ഉടൻ തന്നെ ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിൽ പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചു. അമ്മയുടെ ഡിസ്ചാർജിനു ശേഷം മകൻ ഫേസ്ബുക്കിൽ ഈ കാര്യം പോസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തു. ഇത്തരം പാനീയങ്ങൾ തിയേറ്ററിനുള്ളിൽ അനുവദിക്കുമ്പോളുള്ള ഗുരുതര പ്രശനങ്ങൾ തീർച്ചയായും ചർച്ച ചെയ്യപ്പെടേണ്ടതാണ്.

WENT TO CHILL, CAME BACK BURNT.

On 23 June 2018, my parents and I went to watch a movie at PVR Cinemas, Lulu Mall, Kochi. Amma is a movie buff, while Appa specialises in sleeping through movies. Lights dimmed post-intermission, two minutes later the theatre echoed with Amma’s screams.

The fellow seated in the row behind had gone out at intermission. By the time he came back, the theatre was dark. He lost his balance just before his seat and the contents of the tray fell on my unsuspecting Amma. Two cups of STEAMING HOT green tea sent out on a FLAT tray!!! Do you know how they make tea? With steamer from the espresso machine!

What followed was confusion, anger, and a trip to the hospital in the mall ambulance.

Yesterday, 27 June, Amma was discharged from the hospital. She has extensive burns on her left hand and smaller ones across her body. She is still in a lot of pain and discomfort. The doctor foresees a recovery period of at least one month if not more. Thankfully, she does not need skin graft surgeries.

A freak accident it may be, but my takeaway from this incident is the need to regulate if not ban hot beverages inside the movie hall. Multiplexes like PVR cinemas should know better than sending out hot beverages on a FLAT tray into a DARK hall. Next time, it could be someone’s face for all you know, and an ‘oops sorry we didn’t foresee this’ is not going to cut it.
