Mammootty to star in YS Rajasekhara Reddy Biopic!

Recent reports from Tollywood says that, Malayalam actor Mammootty has signed YS Rajasekhara Reddy biopic which is titled Yatra. According to the latest reports, the megastar has signed the project and will be starring in the titiular role of the movie as the late Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

Telugu filmmaker Mahi Raghav is directing the movie which is being planned as a multingual in all major Indian languages. An official announcement regarding the entire cast and crew is awaited from the makers. Earlier a source close to the movie said that, “The negotiations are on and he is still attached to the project. Although he liked the idea, Mammootty is yet to give a go-ahead to the filmmakers.

Besides YSR’s role, the casting process for other roles is underway and an official announcement on the cast and crew will be out soon.” If everything falls into place, the film will mark the return of Mammootty to Telugu cinema after 25 years.

To be produced by Shashi Devireddy and Vijay Chilla, Yatra is in the pre-production stage.
YSR, as the leader was widely known, died in a helicopter crash in September 2009 during his second term as Andhra Pradesh chief minister.

The biopic, titled Yatra, will reportedly focus on the period between 1999 and 2004, particularly Reddy’s 1,475 km foot yatra across Andhra Pradesh, which culminated in the Congress leader’s victory in the 2004 Assembly elections. “We want to showcase the various challenges that YSR faced during this period, including a financial crisis of sorts, and how he emerged winner,” says director Raghav.

The director said he’s thrilled to be associated with the project which will join the growing trend of biopic in Telugu cinema. As of now, four films – Mahanati, biopic on NTR, biopic on Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy and the Gopichand biopic – are in the offing. Mahanati, the film based on the life of legendary southern actress Savitri, is confirmed to hit the screens on March 26 this year.
