Dangal Movie Review - Dangal Hindi Film Review

Aamir Khan’s Dangal is as thundering as its title comprising of honest emotions and sheer hard work. No doubt, Dangal could be Aamir’s best performance till date. Yes, even better than Lagaan. A man making his daughters chases his dream. The story starts off with a recap of Mahavir Singh Phogat’s life, played by Aamir Khan. When Mahavir Singh Phogat, wrestler from Haryana, after getting four daughters he gives up on his dream only to suddenly realise that his daughters Geeta and Babita have an appetite for fighting. He trains his daughters Geeta (Fatima) and Babita (Sanya) to make wrestling history. He breaks the taboo of Indian women participating in a sport thus far dominated by men. But Dangal is so much more than just the journey of two girls from rural India to international acclaim. The real soul of this story is the pride and passion with which a father empowers his daughters. Though he remains stern and yet sensitive to his daughters’ ambitions and emotions, Mahavir Singh Phogat continues to be the better man and a stellar father. While the first half of the film is dedicated to an engaging story about the growth of the girls, the second half explores their journey into the world of International wrestling.

Director Nitesh Tiwari, along with Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain and Nikhil Mehrotra should be complimented for bringing up the father-daughter emotions all through. Messages on our obsession with the male child are very well portrayed in the movie. But the best part of the film is its subtle nod to true gender equality. Coming to the technicalities, Dangal features wrestling matches that are authentic and real. Aided by good BGM and lens work all of the background work did not go in vain. Dangal scores with its first-rate performances. Aamir with grey hair is pitch-perfect in the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat. His performance is a lot more complex than just the striking physical transformation. The debutants Fatima and Sanya are easily this year’s best finds. Dangal has everything that you’d ask from the perfect Hindi film!
